Good Night

*Louis Janmot *

Night

Slowly the evening changes the robes,
holding it by a row of ancient trees;
you look: and you, the countries differ,
a world traveling, and one that falls;

and leave you, never quite belonging,
not quite as dark as the darkened houses,
not to eternity imploringly
as what is star each night and climbs -

and leave you inexpressibly to unravel
your life and bang immensity and,
so that it soon limited and soon realizing
is alternately stone in you and star.

Rainer Maria Rilke

The sun teaches all beings to yearn for the light.
But it is the night that raises us all to the stars.

Khalil Gibran
